Student Support 1 (SS1)

There are a number of referral routes in place for SS1.

Red Referrals

SS1 are notified if the following incidents occur resulting in a RED referral form:

  • Physical Assault on a member of staff OR student
  • Threatening behaviour toward a member of staff OR student
  • Verbal abuse of a member of staff

Students entering SS1 by this route will be given oreinted work to do by the Inclusion Tutor. Click here to see the role of Inclusion Tutors.

Seeking Support from SS1

Brief details of the issue are given to SS1 on the standard green form used to write up interviews and incidents.

The Duty Manager (either a Leadership Manager, Curriculum Manager or ) will attend and support staff in the resolution of the issue.

Possible outcomes may be:

Adminoshing the student involved and replacing him/her in the teaching group.

Relocating the student according to the provision made within the Curriculum Area.

Removing the student to SS1 in the event of the incident escalating.

Curriculum Managers' Referral

Curriculum Managers may refer a student to SS1 through the relevant Student Manager for a period of time to be agreed.

In these cases appropriate work for the student must be with the Inclusion Tutor at the beginning of each day of the referral and must be collected at the end of each day.

Respite

Student Managers placing a student in SS1 for respite will continue to ensure that Curriculum Areas provide an adequate supply of appropriate work.

Student Support 2 (SS2)

There are three learning mentors in our team. We have been established in RCS for 8 years.

We work in KS3 with students who are underachieving. Evidence of underachievement is obtained from PAL grades. These students receive 1:1 interviews, targets are set and certificates are awarded to show progress.

In Year 10 the KS4 cohort is identified through non completion of coursework. The learning mentors receive a list of students from subject staff who have not met deadlines. These students are then interviewed and referred to Coursework Support if appropriate. This takes place in OLC1 Monday to Thursday 3:10 to 4:15pm.

A cohort of Year 11 students are identified by Year 10 predicted grades and Year 11 estimated grades and 1:1 interviews take place weekly to support students in order for them to make improvements.

Student Support 3 (SS3)

The main function of SS3 is to provide learning support for Literacy and the broader curriculum. It is a literacy resource room and the office of the Learning Support Manager / SENCo. Those students on the Special Educational Needs cohort access the room. The area is well resourced with computers with access to the specialised learning programmes and the Internet.

Types of Activities in SS3

  • Small groups have programmes of direct teaching for literacy.
  • Programmes relating to speech, language and communication skills are delivered.
  • Students are tested to provide professional information for exam boards, outside agencies and Annual Reviews.
  • Vulnerable students are accommodated as part of their timetable.
  • Students are mentored and interviewed by SEN staff.
  • An after school homework club is available four nights each week
  • The room is also used for training and meetings.

Student Support 4 (SS4)

This is where our Attendance Team - the Professional Assistants to Student Managers undertake the massive task of recording, monitoring and following up all aspects of student attendance and punctuality.

Absent students' parents/carers are contacted by telephone on the first day of an absence.

Student Support 5 (SS5)

This room is sub divided into three smaller rooms. There is a small room with a sink and SEN files and information. Students are not allowed in this area and it is locked.

One room is for Literacy and Curriculum Support the other is a dedicated Maths resource area available for individual or group learning. Those students on the Special Educational Needs cohort access this facility.
